I was thinking twice on buying a cake then, coz I knew I wouldn’t have money to go to school the following day. But what the heck. It was your special day, my father’s bday! So I bought whatever cake my allowance could afford, went home and found you in the veranda - seemingly waiting for me to come home.
I gave you my humble gift, to which you responded: “Sabi na nga ba may pasalubong ka sa kin eh.” You were so happy you even gave me money to buy ice cream and lechon! Then we - Kuya, Nanay, you and I - feasted on your handa.
Little did I know that, on that day, seven years ago, it was going to be your last birthday with us.
I could have saved more money, so I could buy you a bigger cake. Or even bought a real gift - say, a nice pair of jeans or a shirt. Right now, there are a lot of could have been’s that I can think of. But these do not matter anymore. I know I could have done better, but being the simple and humble person you were, a cheap cake off the bakeshop from your daughter was already enough to make you happy.
Happy birthday, Tay!
I hope, until this day, I still do make you happy (and proud!), and whenever you’re looking down from heaven on me, you still wear that lovely and genuine smile. :)
